Joe Biden Flops In Big Moment, Hits Lowest Numbers In Key Metric Since 1998 With Just 41% Reacting Very Positively To SOTU
President Joe Biden gave his big State of the Union Speech hoping for a rest after a disastrous year in office. It didn’t happen according to a snap CNN poll. In fact, Biden had the lowest number of people who reacted very positively to his speech since 1998.
While 71 percent of people who watched had a positive reaction to Biden’s speech, only 41 percent of the total viewers watching Biden’s address on Tuesday night had a ‘very positive’ reaction to the speech.
CNN’s David Chalian gave Biden more bad news saying the poll had roughly 11 points more Democrats among respondents. In a poll heavily weighted towards Dems, Biden fell far short of where he was last year and where he needs to be if the Dems have any hopes for avoiding disaster in 2022.
Last year 51 percent of those who watched Biden’s address in front of Congress saw it as ‘very positive.’ That is a ten-point drop.

A 71% majority of Americans who watched President Joe Biden’s State of the Union address had a positive reaction to the speech, according to a CNN Poll conducted by SSRS, with a more modest 41% reacting very positively.
That’s a less enthusiastic reception than Biden received for his joint address to Congress last April, when 78% had a positive reaction and 51% reacted very positively.
Both Donald Trump and Barack Obama also saw higher enthusiasm for their speeches during their second years in office:
48% of those who tuned in for Trump’s 2018 State of the Union were very positive, as were an identical 48% of those who watched Obama’s 2010 address.
Biden’s 41% on that metric matches the previous low in CNN’s speech reaction polls dating back to 1998.
…Post-speech, 62% of speech watchers say that Biden’s proposed economic policies would move the country in the right direction, up from half who said that pre-speech.
About three-quarters, 73%, said Biden’s proposals on the coronavirus pandemic would move the US in the right direction, up from 64% prior to the address.
But even those improved numbers fall short of where Biden stood last year. Following Biden’s 2021 speech, 72% of those who’d tuned in thought his economic policies would move the country in the right direction, and 86% believed his Covid-19 policies would do the same.
Speech watchers say, 69% to 31%, that Biden did enough to address Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Three in 10 speech watchers say Biden’s address made them more confident in his handling of the situation in Ukraine, while 56% say that it didn’t affect their confidence in him to handle the issue, and 14% say it left them less confident.
And remember, he spent a good portion of his speech trying to distance himself from the left’s most toxic policies like defund the police. The words may have sounded good but the Dem defund the police brand is so strong words alone can’t fix it.
