Megan Rapinoe Breaks Down After Olympic Loss To Canada: “Not our best game, not our best tournament, this sucks”

Canada stunned the US women’s soccer team today bouncing them from the gold medal game with a shocking 1-0 win. The US team has been the dominant force in the sport for ages and this loss, considering all the politics the team brought to the games, hurts bad for Megan Rapinoe.

A choked-up Megan Rapinoe said this was “not our best game, not our best tournament,” before adding, “this sucks.” She continued: “Obviously, you never want to lose. You never want to lose in a world championship, you never want to lose to Canada, obviously, and you never want to lose playing the way we did.

“Every player in the locker room has 100 things that we would all want to do better and that’s the most frustrating thing for all of us. It’s sad because these things only come around every so often. It’s a tough one to swallow.

“Football always needs joy, when the game is really played at its best, you have it. I feel like we haven’t been able to do that.

“Everything has been a little bit of a struggle, passes off here and there. I hope we find it, I love playing with a big smile on my face, I think everybody else does as well.

“We have a lot to play for, there’s a medal on the line and that means everything, no matter what color it is.

“I think we need to look at ourselves and need to perform better, period.

“We don’t have the juice because the ball is banging off our shins, and we’re not finding open passes, not doing the simple things.

“We can deep dive into analyzing, but there’s all the preparation and analyzing you can do and all the tactics — and then there’s everything else.

“You can’t put a name on everything else, but that’s what we were missing. It’s just the getting it done from players, and the players know that.

“We’ll bounce back from this, and this will make every one of those players in the locker room better.”

Barstool Sports made clear how bad this loss was reporting: “For 1st time in 20 years, Canada has beaten the USA in soccer. Pain.”

From Fox News:

It will be the first time Canada will compete for a gold medal in women’s soccer. The team did not qualify for the Olympics in 1996, 2000 or 2004. The team finished in eighth place in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing and won bronze in the 2012 and 2016 Olympics.

Canada also made it to the quarterfinals of the 2015 Women’s World Cup and the Round of 16 in the 2019 World Cup and had never finished higher than fourth place in the event.

Canada now faces the winner of Australia-Sweden in the gold-medal match

The U.S. failed to score anything against Canadian goalkeeper Stephanie Labbe. The U.S. had 56% of the possession time and six shots on goal compared to Canada’s 44% of possession time and only two shots on goal.

The U.S. looked shaky during Olympic play. The team lost 3-0 in its opening match to Sweden, beat New Zealand and then tied with Australia to barely make the knockout stage. The U.S. needed penalties to defeat the Netherlands before playing Canada.
