California Secretary of State Dooms Gavin Newsom, Officially Confirms Recall Election

California’s Secretary of State just gave embattled Governor Gavin Newsom some terrible news and announced he will officially face a recall election. This is the second time in state history that this will happen.

Her office released a statement that said: “California Secretary of State Shirley N. Weber, Ph.D. notified the Department of Finance (DOF) by letter today that county elections officials reported a total of 43 signatures have been withdrawn statewide from petitions to recall Governor Gavin Newsom, and that the remaining 1,719,900 verified signatures still meet the threshold to initiate a recall election. 

“A sufficient number of verified recall signatures had previously been reached by recall proponents in April. However, in accordance with California election law, voters were given a 30-day period from April 26 to June 8th to request county officials remove their signatures from recall petitions. Secretary Weber’s letter to the Department of Finance triggers the next phase of the recall process in which the DOF will estimate the costs of the gubernatorial recall if it is held as a special election and if it is held as part of the next regularly scheduled election.

“These estimated costs must be submitted to the Governor, the Lieutenant Governor, the Secretary of State, and the Chairperson of the Joint Legislative Budget Committee (JLBC) by August 5. Once the JLBC has had 30 days to review and comment, the Secretary of State will then certify the sufficiency of signatures pursuant to statute.

“It is what it is. This is a Republican recall,” Newsom said earlier this year. “An RNC-backed Republican recall of White supremacists, anti-Semites and people who are opposed to immigration and immigrants is an accurate assessment of who’s behind this recall.”

California’s secretary of state confirmed on Wednesday that the effort aimed at recalling Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) has enough signatures to trigger an election.

The confirmation from the secretary of state’s office comes after it announced in April that the recall effort had enough signatures to qualify for the ballot.

In accordance with California election law, however, voters were given 30 business days to request that their signature be removed from the petition if they wished. That period lasted from April 26 to June 8.

Only 43 signatures were withdrawn from the recall petition, according to the secretary of state’s office, bringing the total number of verified signatures to 1,719,900, which “still meet[s] the threshold to initiate a recall election.”

The total number of signatures required to trigger an election was 1,495,709.

Newsom’s recall election will mark the second time in California’s history that a recall effort triggered a ballot, out of 55 attempts, according to Bloomberg.

The California Department of Finance will now be tasked with estimating the costs of the recall election, both as a special election or if it is part of the next regularly scheduled election, according to the secretary of state’s office. The department will have 30 business days to complete the calculations.

The Joint Legislative Budget Committee will then have 30 days to review and comment on the estimated costs. After that, the secretary of state will then certify the signatures, allowing the lieutenant governor to set a date for the election between 60 and 80 days later.
