Colin Kaepernick’s New Company’s Calls For The Abolition of Police And Prisons In First Book
Colin Kaepernick’s new publishing company is finishing up the editing process on its first project and will soon publish a collection of essays in book form calling for the abolition of police and prisons.
“Today, I’m excited to share that we at @KaepernickPublishing will be releasing our first title, ABOLITION FOR THE PEOPLE: THE MOVEMENT FOR A FUTURE WITHOUT POLICING & PRISONS, on 10/12/21. This anthology builds on decades of organizing and writing against policing & prisons & features the work of over 30 contributors plus a reader’s guide, infographics, & cover art by Emory Douglas,” Kaepernick wrote.
“I’m proud to have edited this collection & hope it adds to the chorus of voices calling for a world without & beyond policing & prisons. #AbolitionForThePeople,” he added.
They issued a summary of the project on Medium that said: “Abolition for the People,” a project produced by Kaepernick Publishing in partnership with LEVEL, seeks to end that debate once and for all.
“Over the next four weeks, the project will publish 30 stories from organizers, political prisoners, scholars, and advocates — all of which point to the crucial conclusion that policing and prisons do not serve as catch-all solutions for the issues and people the state deems social problems.
“Not only do police and prisons fail to make us safer, but reform has only strengthened their most toxic ingrained practices. The only answer is abolition, a full dismantling of the carceral state and the institutions that support it.
“Instead, we need to invest in a future that puts justice and the needs of the community first. A future that, as Colin Kaepernick himself says in his introductory essay, makes us safer, healthier, and truly free.
“The need for abolition is rooted in the anti-Blackness intrinsic to policing and incarceration — phenomena which will be amply proven over the coming days — but the realization of it offers justice for all people in all communities and global liberation from systemic oppression. We invite you to read and learn along with us.”

Colin Kaepernick is continuing to keep busy despite still not having a job in the NFL. On Tuesday he announced that his publishing shingle, Kaepernick Publishing, will be releasing an anthology of essays on police and prison abolition in October.
“Abolition for the People: The Movement For a Future Without Policing & Prisons” will contain 30 essays, and Kaepernick himself served as editor.
The topic of police and prison abolition is something Kaepernick has been passionate about for years.
When he first knelt during the national anthem before a preseason game in 2016, he told NFL.com that he was doing it to protest institutional racism and law enforcement’s treatment of Black people.
“I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses Black people and people of color.
To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder.”
