Bernie’s Campaign Manager Warns Joe Biden That He Will Face Primary Challenger From The Left In 2024
President Joe Biden just got the worst kind of bad news from the progressive wing of the Dem Party and he does not have the juice to fix it. Presidents do not want to get a real primary challenger when they face reelection. It usually means they will lose.
Barack Obama famously fought off a Bernie Sanders primary challenge during his reelection. Obama’s team went nuclear to stop Sanders and they were strong enough to do it. Trump did the same thing. He used the strength of his popularity to make sure any of the people claiming they wanted to primary him knew it was a lost cause.
When Presidents get primaried they tend to lose in the general election like Jimmy Carter did when Ted Kenedy came in and crashed the party. Carter got crushed. Biden is looking a lot like Jimmy Carter. What with the inflation and Dem infighting.
And now Joe can look forward to getting a challenge in the primary from the left.
“Will there be a progressive challenger? Yes,” said Jeff Weaver, Sen. Bernie Sanders’ former presidential campaign manager.
Weaved added, “Progressives are ultimately ascendant. And if nothing else, a progressive running who gets a lot of support will demonstrate that the ideas that the progressive movement embraces are, in fact, popular.”
“He’s deeply unpopular. He’s old as shit. He’s largely been ineffective, unless we’re counting judges or whatever the hell inside-baseball scorecard we’re using. And I think he’ll probably get demolished in the midterms,” said Corbin Trent, co-founder of the progressive No Excuses PAC.
“People will smell opportunity, and D.C. is filled with people who want to be president.”
“It’ll be a bigger primary than people anticipate, I think it’ll be like a Jimmy Carter primary.”
“I don’t think the country nor certainly not progressives in the party, who all tend to be younger, are going to sit on the sidelines,” said Mark Longabaugh, a progressive ad-maker who worked on Sanders’ presidential campaign.
Rep. Ro Khanna, a former Sanders campaign co-chair, is trying to stop the revolt:
“President Biden and his senior team have made a concerted effort to reach out to me since Sen. Sanders’ campaign ended and seek input into legislation and strategy.
“He wants to implement a bold progressive vision, and he will have my enthusiastic support in 2024 so we have eight years to do it.”
From Fox News:
Lee Miringoff, director of the Marist Institute for Public Opinion, said that a big issue for President Biden is his inability to effectively message on areas where his administration may be doing well.
“The economy has some problems, but you know those areas where it’s very strong. But people have doubts and are uncertain because they’re not focusing on that part of it. So we’re hearing about inflation, but not unemployment, and not the GDP. And there are things that he could point to. He hasn’t been very effective at doing,” Miringoff said.
Miringoff said that he thinks it’s a possibility for a Democrat to challenge President Biden, but says it’s not going to be any type of so-called big name.
“If a Democrat runs, it would be viewed as divisive within the party and is likely not to attract a marquee candidate. I think it might be someone who is still looking to raise some issues and create some attention,” Miringoff said.
