Andrew Cuomo Steps To Microphone, Resigns As New York Governor Effective In 14 Days
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo finally accepted reality and resigned from office effective in 14 days saying he will hand the keys to the Gov’s mansion to his lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul.
“The best way I can help now is if I step aside and let the government get back to governing,” Cuomo said Tuesday. “Kathy Hochul my lieutenant governor is smart and competent, this transition must be seamless,” Cuomo added before stating his resignation will be effective in 14 days.
“This report highlights unacceptable behavior by Governor Cuomo and his administration. As I said when these disturbing allegations first came to light, the Governor must resign for the good of the state,” state Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins (D) said.
“Now that the investigation is complete and the allegations have been substantiated, it should be clear to everyone that he can no longer serve as Governor.”
“These interviews and pieces of evidence reveal a deeply disturbing, yet clear picture: Gov. Cuomo sexually harassed current and former state employees in violation of both federal and state laws,” Attorney General Letitia James said Tuesday.
“The independent investigation found that Gov. Cuomo sexually harassed multiple women, many of whom were young women, by engaging in unwanted groping, kisses, hugging and by making inappropriate comments,” she added.
From CNBC:
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Tuesday he will resign in two weeks because of a sexual harassment scandal that has crippled his administration.
Cuomo’s shock announcement came after his lawyer again flatly denied claims that he had sexually harassed anyone.
Lt. Gov. Kathy Hochul will replace Cuomo, becoming the Empire State’s first female governor.
From Buzzfeed:
Cuomo is in his third term as governor and was considered a sure bet to run for, and likely win, a fourth term in 2022.
He has long been the singular, dominant political force in New York playing Republicans and Democrats in the state legislature off one another for years to wield ultimate influence over what became law.
Throughout that time, he was blunt in his use of power, marginalizing political enemies like New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio and establishing a reputation for Machiavellian aggression.
His political career survived multiple other federal investigations, including one that saw one of his closest allies convicted of taking bribes.
