Nancy Pelosi Sinks Liz Cheney, Names Wyoming Rep To Serve On Jan 6 Select Committee
Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) just ended Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) political career in Wyoming and named her to serve on the select committee investigating the riot at the Capitol.
Cheney was one of two Republican Reps to vote to create the select committee. Kevin McCarthy warned his members against letting Pelosi put them on the committee and threatened to remove them from his committee assignments if they did which means Liz may be getting tossed from another role in Congress. To say nothing of how this will play in her heated primary challenge.
Pelosi’s other picks include Administration Committee Chairwoman Zoe Lofgren (Calif.), Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff (Calif.), Pete Aguilar (Calif.), Stephanie Murphy (Fla.), Jamie Raskin (Md.) and Elaine Luria (Va.).
House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.) will serve as the select panel’s leader.
From Punchbowl News:
During a closed-door meeting with freshman House Republicans Wednesday, Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy had a stark warning.
If any Republican accepts an appointment from Speaker Nancy Pelosi to the Jan. 6 select committee, they better be ready to get all their committee assignments from her.
Republicans, McCarthy said, get their committee assignments from Republicans — not from Democrats. Or else.
That’s a pretty stark threat. To be clear, the only Republicans that Pelosi seems to be considering for the new select committee are Reps. Liz Cheney (Wyo.) and Adam Kinzinger (Ill.), who voted for it. Although both of them may be out of Congress by 2023. Of course, McCarthy can move to strip them of their current committee assignments, but that seems like a bridge too far.
Still, McCarthy’s threat — relayed to Punchbowl News by multiple people present — lays bare how he views Pelosi’s idea to name one of his lawmakers to the panel investigating the insurrection.
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) made a wild accusation on Twitter yesterday. She said:
“We need a Select Committee to investigate the Jan. 6th domestic terrorist attack. But we must also be careful about any Republicans that may serve on the committee. There are indications that some of these folks were in on it, & we can’t have them be a part of the investigation,” Ocasio-Cortez wrote on Twitter.
