Elise Stefanik Thanks Trump After Landslide Win To Replace Liz Cheney: “I want to thank President Trump, he is a critical part of our Republican team”
Rep. Elise Stefanik praised former President Donald Trump shortly after winning the vote to replace Liz Cheney in a landslide. She won 134-46 in a secret ballot vote. Chip Roy mounted a last-minute challenge but fell far short. A few other members like Jim Jordan received single votes.
“I wanted to thank my colleagues for the opportunity to serve as the House Republican conference chair. I have prioritized listening to all members of our republican conference and my focus is on unity,” Elise said. “I also want to thank President Trump for his support. He is a critical part of our Republican team,” she added.
“We got a lot of work to do in this conference, the policies of Nancy Pelosi and Joe Biden are destroying this nation,” Kevin McCarthy said. “Congratulations to Elise Stefanik for her Big and Overwhelming victory! The House GOP is united and the Make America Great Again movement is Strong!” Trump said in a statement.
Kim Guilfoyle said: “Elise is a fearless warrior for our Constitution and the MAGA movement. As Conference Chair, she’ll continue to fight for the forgotten men and women who are being left behind by Biden and the radical Dems. We need her leadership to help to fire Pelosi.”
From The Hill:
Stefanik, who was backed by Trump and top House GOP leaders, easily defeated Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas), a member of the conservative House Freedom Caucus who launched a last-minute challenge over concerns Stefanik’s voting record is too liberal. The vote was 134-46.
Three other Republicans, Reps. Jim Jordan (Ohio), Virginia Foxx (N.C.) and Cathy McMorris Rodgers (Wash.), each received a single vote. Nine lawmakers voted present.
Heading into the vote, Stefanik brushed aside those criticisms, pledging that she’d fight to keep Republicans as one voice heading into the 2022 midterm elections, where they like their odds of flipping control of the House.
“We are unified at making sure that we win the majority and that we focus on the damage that the Biden-Pelosi agenda is doing across America,” Stefanik told reporters Thursday night after making her pitch to GOP colleagues.
The closed-door election was held two days after House Republicans took the unprecedented step of voting to oust Cheney from the No. 3 leadership post for continuing to call out Trump’s baseless claims that the 2020 election was stolen and cast blame on the former president for the Jan. 6 insurrection.
