BREAKING: U.S. ATTACKED by Russian Hackers
External websites for major U.S. Airports such as Atlanta, O’Hare and Midway in Chicago, LAX in Los Angeles, and St. Louis International Airport were brought down Oct. 10 by Russian hackers according to officials.
The Chicago Department of Aviation said in a statement, “Early Monday, FlyChicago.com and related websites for O’Hare and Midway international airports went offline,” according to The Epoch Times. “City of Chicago IT staff are currently working to restore the website’s functionality. The City’s Information Security Office at the Department of Assets, Information & Services is investigating the cause of the outage.”
Andrew Gobeil, a spokesman for Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, told The Associated Press, “We noticed this morning that the external website was down, and our IT and security people are in the process of investigating.” However, Gobeil stressed, “There has been no impact on operations.”
Officials at St. Louis reportedly told KDSK-TV that their websites also went down, but like other airports emphasized that the outage did not impact operations.
Spokeswoman Victoria Spilabotte of LAX told reporters that portions of the Los Angeles International Airport website were down as well.
She explained, “No internal airport systems were compromised and there were no operational disruptions,” Epoch Times reported.
“Obviously, we’re tracking that, and there’s no concern about operations being disrupted,” Kiersten Todt, chief of staff for The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, told a press conference in Georgia, as reported by CNN.
Senate Majority Leader, Democrat Chuck Schumer of New York, told ABC News, “We are pretty clear it’s a Russian cyber group that claimed responsibility,” he added. “We are asking our authorities to confirm who did it and then take the appropriate strong action, so the Russians know they cannot get away with this.”
In a post to Telegram, the Russian-speaking hacker group “We Are KillNet” wrote (Translated),
“The Russian patriotic hacker group Killnet launched a call among allies to destroy the websites of American airports. Among one and a half dozen sites that hackers banged (and continue to put) there are several sites of the largest airports of pendos!”
They continued, claiming credit for attacking over a dozen airports, “One of the strongest attacks hit the airports of Atlanta, Arizona, Alabama, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Hawaii, Illinois, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri …”
“The Amercos reminded their viewers and readers that last week Killnet hackers claimed responsibility for attacking US government websites. Killnet has been blamed for briefly taking down the U.S. Congress website in July and for cyberattacks on organizations in Lithuania,” the alleged hackers added.
In a different post to Telegram, the group stated their intent to “commit DDoS [distributed denial of service attacks] on the civilian network infrastructure of the United States of America.” The “Russian patriotic hacker group,” while likely not under the official auspices of the Kremlin, is no doubt fully visible to Russia’s Federal Security Service or FSB.
And if Vladimir Putin isn’t cracking down on their efforts, that could indicate his tacit approval of their results.
