Investigators Have a New Theory on How Bob Saget Died
Did Bob Saget die in his sleep after hitting his head or, did someone help him go gently into that good night?
His death was ruled accidental by the medical examiner. Within hours of the autopsy, a number of doctors noted the injuries were substantial and compared the results to victims of serious injury, accident or assault. Internet researchers soon stoked conspiracy theories by linking an October 2021 podcast featuring Saget and his wife, Kelly Rizzo. In the episode of his podcast “Bob Saget’s Here for You”, he joked his wife’s choice of movies probably meant he would be found dead in his bed soon.
Since he was found dead in his bed soon after the podcast, conspiracy theories began growing on social media. If a recent People Magazine report is correct, which sources an unidentified Orange County Sheriff’s Deputy, those theories would appear to be wrong.
Security camera footage from the Orlando, Fla. Ritz-Carlton hotel show Saget opening the door to his room at 2:17 a.m., hanging a “Do Not Disturb” sign before locking the door from the inside, People Magazine reported. An important detail in the report said the door didn’t open again until the following afternoon when hotel security found him, which means he was alone the whole time.
“It is in my opinion that the death of Robert Saget, a 65-year-old white male found unresponsive in a hotel room, is the result of blunt head trauma,” Orange County Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Joshua D. Stephany said in a statement. “It is the most probable that the decedent suffered an unwitnessed fall backwards and struck the posterior aspect of his head. Shortly after autopsy results of the actor’s death were released, credible medical experts questioned the initial medical conclusion that he fell and went to sleep, never to awaken.
“When you read this autopsy report, that may still be the case, but it was a very significant blow to the head,” CNN Medical Correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta said at the time. He explained the skull fractures were serious enough to stretch from the back of Saget’s head around to his right temporal bone and noted additional fractures on the front of his skull as he pointed to the area above both eyes.
This is not a ‘slip & fall’. This is not a minor concussion,” opined Doctor Megan Ranney. “This is a MAJOR head trauma.” Her Twitter comments appeared above a copy of the autopsy results. Ranney is a practicing emergency physician as well as the Dean for the School of Public Health at the Ivy League University, Brown.
Investigators now believe Saget fell backwards, hit his head on the marble floor and lost consciousness in the bathroom, according to a report in the Western Journal, which added he climbed into bed after regaining consciousness and fell asleep. Saget is believed to have relapsed into unconsciousness and died without reawakening.
“We cannot confirm any details that have not previously been released by this office,” an Orange County Sheriff spokesperson said in answer to confirm the information released by People’s unnamed source.
