Dem Rep Deals Big Blow To Nancy Pelosi, Backs AOC’s Call For New Leadership In Party
Rep. Abigail Spanberger, D-Va., is a key moderate Dem in the House. There are not many of those left after the 2020 election debacle so her voice carries a lot of weight.
Today she put Nancy Pelosi on notice by backing her colleague Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s, D-N.Y., call to get rid of Pelosi and Schumer.
Asked by MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell whether she agreed with AOC’s call for new leadership, Spanberger said:
“We’re a broad tent party. I have longed maintained that we need to have new voices and new leadership across the board.”
Pelosi can survive a challenge from her left by AOC but she will not survive if the moderates and the far left join forces.
AOC said earlier: “I do think we need new leadership in the Democratic Party. I think one of the things that I have struggled with, I think that a lot of people struggle with, is the internal dynamics of the House has made it such that there are very little options for succession.”
“The hesitancy that I have is that I want to make sure that if we’re pointing people in a direction, that we have a plan,” she said.
“My concern, and I acknowledge this as a failing, as something that we need to sort out, is that there isn’t a plan,” she said.
“How do we fill that vacuum?”
“Because if you create that vacuum, there are so many nefarious forces at play to fill that vacuum with something even worse.”
“And so, the actual sad state of affairs is that there are folks more conservative than even they are willing to kind of fill that void.”
“The answer is we need to shift power,” Ocasio-Cortez said.
“We need to make sure that we have a transition of power in the Democratic Party.”
“The House is extraordinarily complex and I’m not ready,” she said.
“It can’t be me. I know that I couldn’t do that job.”
